Many worlds: decoherent or incoherent?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Deutsch-Wallace-Everett programme is conceptually incoherent since its viability rests upon a notion of decoherence that conflicts with its own fundamental precepts in two respects. These problems are not alleviated by invoking the notion of emergent or robust structure, and are argued to be significant enough to cast doubt upon the viability of the entire neo-Everettian enterprise as it now stands. ∗[email protected] †[email protected]

Possibility, actuality, and the growth of imagination: The many-worlds approach to quantum physics
Everett-DeWitt interpretations of quantum physics speak of a multiplicity of physically coexisting worlds. These imaginative reactions to the conceptual problems of standard quantum mechanics form a family of physicalist “many-worlds” proposals (PMW for short) that have been variously dismissed as “incoherent”, so far without full success. A renewed charge by Hilary Putnam now seems to pose dee...
متن کاملSignatures of Incoherence in a Quantum Information Processor
Incoherent noise is manifest in measurements of expectation values when the underlying ensemble evolves under a classical distribution of unitary processes. While many incoherent processes appear decoherent, there are important differences. The distribution functions underlying incoherent processes are either static or slowly varying with respect to control operations and so the errors introduc...
متن کاملQuantum process tomography of the quantum Fourier transform.
The results of quantum process tomography on a three-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor are presented and shown to be consistent with a detailed model of the system-plus-apparatus used for the experiments. The quantum operation studied was the quantum Fourier transform, which is important in several quantum algorithms and poses a rigorous test for the precision of ou...
متن کاملThe many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics: psychological versus physical bases for the multiplicity of “worlds”
A crucial distinction in discussions of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics (MWI) is that between versions of the interpretation positing a physical multiplicity of worlds, and those in which the multiplicity is merely psychological, and due to the splitting of consciousness upon interaction with amplified quantum superpositions. It is argued that Everett’s original version of t...
متن کاملThe Multiverse and Divine Creation
I provide the account of divine creation found in multiverse theorists Donald Turner, Klaas Kraay, and Tim O’Connor. I show that the accounts Kraay and Turner offer are incoherent. God does not survey all possible worlds and necessarily actualize those universes in the (on balance) good worlds or the worthy worlds. If God necessarily actualizes the multiverse, we have no idea which universes ar...
